The passing of Mango Jon DesPacio

Aloha,

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our dear friend Jon DesPacio (aka Mango Jon) on June 6th. Jon was an integral member of Ka Pilina Hawaii and served as our Fire Chief for each Rebirth.

Jon was also an early veteran of Burning Man first going the second year it was in the Black Rock desert. Jon was one of the very first few Rangers and one of those first years it was him who sold the Burning Man tickets onsite out of that old small silver trailer (with only a gun as backup). He also organized the first (and I think one of the only) playa marathon.

He was a kind soul and a good man and dear friend. We will miss him.

Below are a few words from Freddi (she was also his partner) and Danger Ranger.

From Freddi:

Friends
Most of you know that Mango Jon DesPacio died at his home Sat.June 6th.
He had been at the warm ponds earlier that morning, declined to go to a party as his stomache was upset but planned to have dinner with me that night. I found him on the porch.I tried to revive him but was unable to. He looked peaceful.
His Daughters Miel and Mari were here from Califonia, also Miels' husband Thad and grandchildren Andre and Lydia.

We had the memorial on June 14th. We rented 80 chairs. It was exactly right. There was music,
several people with gutiars. a bass a mandolin and a digeridoo. Miel spoke about her father and read an original version of the lords prayer (very beautiful) then Andre, the 4 year old, sang "twinkel twinkel little star" and then everyone sang it with him. It was so sweet. Then people got up and told Mango Jon stories. Then more music and people drifted away.
I want to thank you all for the support . Jackie helped me clean and get ready for his family. Jackie, did I thank you for the flowers and the box of toys for the kids? You ROCK Sista! Mike Muang sent an amazing piece of art, Ranger Partime brought a very burnable votive type structure. It was so fine to see Eli, Drew and August(Our communities youngest burner)Bridget and Jerry Guy and Jodi and Nicky, Pat and Jamie, thanks for being there,Thank you all for your phone calls an emails. I know I'll miss him. He was an excellent fire marshal.

Aloha
Freddi

From Michael Michael (aka Danger Ranger):

I just got word of the passing of Hawaiian burner Jon DesPacio. He was a participant and Black Rock Ranger during the early years of Burning Man 1993-1995.

I regret that I was never able to take him up on the offer of a stay at his tropical farm in Hawaii.

In 1995 he organized the Gerlach to Burning Man marathon run:

An update about John Corbin

Aloha,

It is with an incredible degree of sadness that I am reporting to you
all that John Corbin has a pretty bad case of cancer. He is getting
the best care possible at the VA in Palo Alto in the Bay Area which is
associated with the Stanford Medical Center. They are still running
tests to determine the extent of his cancer and the proper course of
treatment.

John is one of the 3 Burning Man Hawaii co-Regional Contacts and he is
the Big Island Director for Ka Pilina. John has been instrumental in
getting Rebirth off the ground and with building the local Burning Man
community on the Big Island. John is a great friend to me and many
other burners and friends out there.

This all has taken a heavy toll on John. He is normally a very fun
loving and carefree kind of guy but this has really gotten him down.
John already is getting a lot of help from friends and family in the
Bay Area but what he really can use is your moral support. Please send
John a note at flaghfine@hotmail.com and let him know that you care.
If you want to mail something to him send me an email and I will give
you the address where he is staying.

Thank you so much for helping to support John at this critical time.
He has given so much to the community it is now time for the community
to show him just how much he means to all of us.

BURNING MAN LIVE (Piss Clear Mag)

Hey Fellow Burners,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

Just go to the link below to check out the book or make an order:

http://www.researchpubs.com

Anyway, it's an amazing book and I suggest you all check it out, if interested.

NOTE: I found this message from another BM I'm a part of. I ordered the book -- loved it, talked to the woman who is spreading the word -- and now I'm spreading the word, too. This reminds me of the old BM days, as well as the more recent. It's great fun!

Aloha. As some or most of you might know, a friend of mine from DPW Burning Man was in a horrific motorcycle accident while biking in India with her boyfriend about a week and a half ago. Her boyfriend Harrison kept her alive with CPR for 30 minutes until she was taken to a hospital, though her mother and family would love to get her home and to Stanford Medical Center which has agreed to care for her for FREE if only they can arrange to have an air ambulence, which costs in the ballpark of $150,000. She suffered severe brain damage and is in a coma. Through the miracle of word of mouth and the fact that she touched so many peoples' lives with her amazing heart, a website on her behalf, friendsofhollis.blogspot.com/,
has been able to raise $70,000! But we're not there yet. People all over the country have organized fundraisers on her behalf, shows with performers, singers, dancers, dj's, clowns, ANYTHING, in attempts to raise money to get our dear friend home. I have no experience in organizing a fundraiser, but plead with anyone who does to contact me and help me get this thing started...Please visit the website, read her story, she is an AMAZING lady! Help me get this party started, help get our dear friend home so that she might get the care that she needs so that she can wake up soon! Dig deep in your heart, dig deep in your pocket, whatever you can do to help this sweet lady wake up and grace us with her shiny presence once more!
Mahalos and love!
Namaste!~
~Siren
PS I'm on Oahu

Fundraiser for Silicon Valley Burner Skid's Health CARE - IMPORTANT!!!!

*this was sent to me by a Sacramento burner - Skid has been a tight
part of this South Bay Community for many years and anything anyone
can do to help, no matter how small, please consider - his kidney's
are failing and he needs dialysis three times a week.

In our year-round nature of giving, please consider this on your list.

********

To all Burners,

I am writting this request, for fellow burner, my friend, Mike
Aquino, aka 'Skid'. Many of you know Skid very well, for those of you
who don't, let me introduce you.

Skid formed K-SVERT 106.5 FM in 1997 with his childhood friend, Tom
Sherry (PlayaMonkey). A humble one watt of radio broadcast,
entertained Black Rock City, and was coined the "One watt
Flamethrower". Skid pioneered Burningman radio, and in 1998 was
responsible, for assigning broadcast frequencies to other camps, who
wanted to followed his lead, and desired to start their own radio
station. To this day, to broadcast @ BRC, you must receive your
frequency assignment from Skid.

In 2002, He co-founded Burning Silicone, the south bay's own region.
(name changed to South Bay Burners in 2008). Skid served as the first
Co-Regional, with Sandra McBride (Gidget), until both retired in 2006.
His leadership and guidance, enable his region to grow into the major
contributor to the Burningman project, that it is today. Meanwhile,
K-SVERT grew into the largest & most powerful radio station on the
playa. Building our landmark tower in 2002, and adding our performance
& shadow stages in 2003. Since 2003, K-SVERT been a presence on the
Esplanade, with a 60' high flashing beacon, guiding the masses home
during whiteouts. Skid is the Mayor of K-SVERT, and serves on our
Board of Directors.

Skid's had his hand in helping others with their projects. He
designed the mini-golf course for 'Lawngames' in 2002 & 2003. In 2001
he designed & built 'Betelguise the Flaming Art Car' . Skid was a
major contributor to Burning Silicone's collaborative project the
"Pagoda of Infinite Reflection" in 2004. When in 2005 we were placed
next door to Deathguild's Thunderdome, Skid proposed we build our own
version, only smaller, and with rabbits. Thumperdome was born.

In June of this year, Skid's life took a turn. He was admitted to the
hospital with anemia and kidney failure. (Skid has had type 2 diabetes
for the past ten years). His condition was dire, he received blood
transfusions, and suffered a very bad seizure. For 72 hours, it was
BAD. We thought we might lose him. His short term memory was gone.
Those of us who visited him, were forgotten once we left the room
(this scared me the most). It took weeks for him to be strong enough
to leave the hospital. He will endure receiving dialysis 3 times a
week, for 3 hours at a time, for the rest of his life. Or until he
receives a kidney transplant. He is currently on a transplant waiting
list.

He was determined to attend the burn, whatever it would take. He was
there for two days. We shuttled him to Reno, Saturday morning for
dialysis, and got him back before the burn. He was very thin & weak,
but he was so glad to be home, even if only for two days.

Once back in the default world, Skid had two stints placed into his
heart in October (in preparation for the future transplant). Things
were starting to falling into place, then, Skid lost his job. Along
with his job, Skid lost his health care. He has sent out hundreds of
resumes, but received only one interview. Until he can secure another
job, (hopefully with health coverage that will cover his pre-existing
condition), he continues to receive the care he urgently needs through
COBRA. His COBRA payments are over $400 per month.

To help Skid make these payments, a fundraiser, "Mikeapalooza" has
been scheduled for December 29, 2008 @ Britannia Arms, Almaden, San
Jose. Skid's close friends, PlayaMonkey & SassyJill, (Tom & Jillian)
have set up a "Mike Aquino COBRA" fund (The MAC Fund) to collect other
donations, For PayPal: Send money to; Mikeapalooza@gmail.com as
Services/Other. To send a check, made out to, Tom Sherry to : Tom Sherry

On a personal level, Mike has always been there for me, my brother
from a different mother. Come out & help us celebrate & help Mike
continue on his road to recovery. Mike has devoted much of his time to
helping others (and Burningman), now it's time for us to be there for him.

The official word from DPW pal.
"It will be the dustiest year ever. Worse than last year. The playa is like the beach. Soft and sandy and a mess. Huge dunes, bumpy. I've almost wiped out on my bike a few times. But the nights have been gorgeous and totally still. Hunker down during the day storms and save your energy for the night time."

Reminders from the Black Rock City Post Office (BRCPO) at Center Camp

Depending on where you are mailing from it is probably about time to send off your cards, letters, and care packages to loved ones in Black Rock City!

When mailing to Black Rock City please address your playa-bound mail as completely as possible in this format to increase the odds of it being received:

CAMPER'S PLAYA NAME or REAL NAME ...or better, both.
CAMP NAME ...and any helpful descriptions of street facade, tents, or large features that might be at this location to help the postie find the addressee
CAMP ADDRESS ...as close as you can get (example: 9:35 and Hummer) &/or nearest cross-street, and even Man-side or mountain-side (if you know)
C/O BRCPO
Burning Man
Gerlach, NV 89412

...and include a return address, just in case.

Please remember no postage stamps are sold at the BRCPO at Center Camp, so bring postage stamps for mailing postcards (postcards from Burning Man are available as gifts at the BRCPO at Center Camp) and letters. If you bring extras for others then your gift of stamps is always appreciated.

What's up yall?

I'll be going to the burn this year... My name is Seth. I'll be sure to check you guys out at 430 and Gremlin. I live up in Volcano.. and have always missed the Hawaii burner activities...unfortunately. Looking forward to befriending some of you out on the playa.

I just bought tix to oakland on the night of the 22nd. Hawaiian just dropped their prices... and I fly back from oakland the morning of the first. I thought I could jump on a southwest flight to reno..but I can't. Currently I'm pondering a rental car or a rideshare. If this story seems familiar to you drop me a line at sjudge@hawaii.edu

Hello beautiful people,
My name is Reed, and I have recently (two week ago) moved back to Hawai'i from San Francisco (Mom needs help around the house). No Burning Man for me this year:-( Mom comes first:-)
I was hoping that someone out there might know of, or help me in finding some steady, reliable employment in the Pahoa, Hilo area.
I am a very hard worker, that is dependable, and I am very good with my hands. I am very easy going, and I follow direction very well.
I promise I wont make you look bad if you refer me to a friend or coworker.
I am looking for something in the renewable energy field (solar), but will consider many other avenues of employment.
Much Maholo.

Here is my resume...

Objective
To establish a career in a company wherein my concern for the environment and experiences in construction may be applied and where I can make an important contribution and be part of the solution to the company’s growth and development.

Work Experience
I have worked in various aspects of the (union) heating and air conditioning industry for over eight years. I have a great deal of experience in the design, installation, and servicing of residential, commercial HVAC systems.
While in the Coast Guard attached to Group San Francisco, I was assigned to the ANT (Aids to Navigation) Team on Yeba Buena Island. For two (2) years I was devoted to the maintenance and repair of small aids to navigation (buoys) and lighthouses. Most of my work involved designing, building, trouble shooting, and repairing solar systems. Areas of my responsibilities range from Humbolt Bay to Morro Bay, Farallon Islands to the inland waterways of the central California deltas, and Lake Tahoe.

Work History

US Coast Guard
New York
1993-1994
Law enforcement
Search and rescue
Repatriation & Humanitarian act for Refugees
San Francisco
1995-1996
Aids to Navigation Team

Ocean Side Sheet Metal
1997-1998
While working for Ocean Side I gained a lot of experience working on gutters and
flashing.

Gaffiigan Sheet Metal
1998-2001
While working for Gaffigan I was a part of the installation department. most of my work was dealing with designing, and installing water heater, furnace, and air conditioning systems.

Four Seasons Air Conditioning & Heating
2001-2004
While working for the Four Seasons I learned a lot about being a team leader, and how to manage a crew of two to five workers.

Selco Air Conditioning & Heating
2004-2008
While working for Selco I had the opportunity to run my own job sites. Drawing plans, ordering material, and managing personnel where some of my responsibility.

I am also looking to network, and meet some new friend.
If any one needs help getting ready for Burning Man, drop me a line. I would be more that willing to give you a hand (for free of course).

Thank you so much for spending the time to look this over. I hope you can help me.

URGENT ACTION!! We need you to send email a copy of this right NOW!

If we have ANY hope of burning the phoenix at Rebirth 2008 we NEED the community to come together RIGHT NOW to make Mayor Harry Kim change his mind and grant us a burn exemtion. They are telling us that we can NOT burn the phoenix based on an emergency proclamation banning all outdoor fires. The Mayor can give us an exemtion but will not give us the time of day as we are nobodys.

We NEED you the community to send in a mass of emails (please personalize to your liking but hit on the same points) to help them understand just how much the community is invested in the burning of the phoenix.

Time is running out, please send this in to Mayor Kim at RIGHT NOW! Thank you for your help, with your input we might actually pull this off.

Here is the email we need you to send (please personalize it and delete everything above it, thank you):

Aloha Honorable Mayor Kim,

I am a participant in the annual Rebirth festival in Pahoa. I have learned recently that the centerpiece of the event, the ceremonial burning of the phoenix, may be prevented by your emergency proclamation prohibiting non-cooking fires.

The ceremonial burning of the phoenix has a lot of meaning to me. It is the culmination of an event that has:

-Brought me closer to my neighbors and community
-Helped to support local art and artists
-Become a boon to a economically troubled part of the island

The ceremonial burning of the phoenix is the formal end to Rebirth. Without it I leave empty and unfulfilled. Please grant a burn exemtion to Rebirth 2008 so we can continue our tradition.

Mahalo nui loa for your time and kokua,

Your Name

Ka Pilina Forum...? (And Aloha!)

Cross-post from the forum on kapilina.org as that doesn't seem to get much traffic...
________________________________________________________________

My wife and I live in Seattle and are looking at mid/late September for a trip out to Hawaii. We're active members of the Ignition Northwest Burner community and have heard phenomenal things from our local Tribe that have visited and attended Rebirth. My wife's produced our Regional - Critical Massive - the last two years and is a Board Member. Me? I'm her "Executive Administrative Assistant"... and do most things Fire.

She will be ~7.5 months pregnant at the time, so we aren't looking for a ton of activities, nor do we want to Couch Surf, but I figured putting a post up may help us connect with the local Burner Scene - either for a sweet hookup on a week-long rental, or at least to throw down some fire play.

If you have an in-law unit or know of a GREAT place to stay we'd be more than happy to reciprocate should you ever find yourself headed our way... something a VERY close walk to a nice sandy beach would be ideal.

Thanks - look forward to meeting you all soon-ish. You can e-mail me directly at playadoc(at)gmail.

yikes, I've been swamped. Hokay we're willing to look at a couple more people for this year, but it had better be soon. At this point we're looking at a good crowd and nearing our max for the space we are requesting. Since MOOP management has been difficult in years past (you KNOW who you are) we are NOT accepting refugees this year (outside of our favorite refugees... you know who YOU are). Sooooo apply now or forever hold yer peace....

Ka Pilina themecamp @ Burning Man!

The registration forms are in and we are now accepting applications for people interested in camping with Ka Pilina at Burning Man this year!

The details are still fuzzy, but we are hoping for a spot on the 4:30 Plaza, as two great friends of ours have conspired to create the Ketchup! installation in the center of 4:30 Plaza. There will be a shaded area for tent campers, basic kitchen facilities, and this year we should have a couple of generators too. Space is limited in camp and we're estimating that there are about 30 spots spoken for already. This means that we will likely only accept another 5-7 people before we call all full.

So if you're interested in camping with Ka Pilina this year we'll need:

Name
Phone
email
date of arrival
date of departure
# of guests
# of cars
willingness to volunteer for camp setup?
willingness to volunteer for camp duties?
what hours/days?

It's not exactly first come, first serve, but the sooner you get your application in the more time we have to look at it!

Seth
Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society
O'ahu Director

PS. Please send applications to my tribe.net inbox, I check it regularly! Or if you are one of the lucky few to have my email address you can send it there too.

We are a burner couple with a fantastic 2 bedroom home in Oakland, next to a 15 minute subway ride into SF. Instead of going to Burning Man, this year we want to go to Hawaii. Would anyone want to trade our home for your home at the end of August? Or would you be willing to let us rent out your home while you are at Burning Man?

We are responsible, green, and creative. Please PM me if you are interested.

Rebirth Event on Big Island...need more info and contacts

Hey everyone!

Just joined TRIBE just now so forgive me for posting this way, I tried to message the moderators but had some issues doing so. Anyway, the reason I am posting is because I just found out about this event last night, purely by accident, but I am SO excited to see something like this happen out here. You see I am a 10 year plus burning man vet who has been living in Kona for the past few months. My theme camp is called Cosmic Giggle and some of you may have checked us out over the years. Anyway, I really want to get involved with this project in any way I can! I know its happening in a few weeks, but I would love to lend my experience, skills and expertise towards making this event really jump off!

I also would love to DJ/VJ this event too. If any of the admins get this, PLEASE contact me asap and let me know the deal and how I can be helpful. I would love to exchange info and ideas!

OK, thats my message. Again sorry for posting it as a new topic rather than private IM but maybe this will allow me to meet other Kona side burners as well...

cheers!

I was shopping around for airfare to come and participate at Rebirth, and discovered Aloha Airlines has gone out of business! Aloha to cheep Airfare, huh? And with that occurance, it looks like the other Airlines are stepping up thier prices for mainland flights to the islands. Better buy soon I guess. I hope this years Rebirth is gonna be awesome, cause it looks like it's gonna cost!

Flight School with Aaron Jessup April 11-13th at Studio Maui.

African dance:
We will be learning different traditional dances from Guinea, West
Africa to live drumming!

Carrie "Acequia" first began her path with African drum and dance in
1999 when she stumbled upon a djembe in a store window in Milwaukee,
WI. The voices of an African choir rose up and a light shone down upon
the tight skin of the drum, and she knew it must be hers. Her love of
the drum quickly intertwined with a passion for African dance.
Since then, Acequia has studied dance and drumming with many master
teachers and completed intensives in Guinea and Mali. Acequia has
travelled all over the world and the United States teaching West
African drumming and dance including New Zealand, New Orleans, New
Mexico, Colorado, and California. She has performed and choreographed
for several troupes in Colorado and California. Acequia would like to
offer much gratitude to the ancestors of the tradition, and her
teachers, Fara Tolno, Djeneba Sako, Abdoul Doumbia, Alseny Soumah,
Yousouff Koumbassa, Marietou Camara, Melanie Berg, and Stuart
Dinwoodie. This is her first visit to the Studio Maui, and she is
excited to offer her enthusiasm, cultural knowledge, and of course,
the sprit of the dance!

Flight School:
April 11 - 13, 2008

Humans were meant to fly, that's why they've been given contact
improvisation!

Join Aaron Jessup for an amazing weekend of community and skill
building on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui . First we will
establish a firm foundation of contact improvisation vocabulary, then
we'll use that common language to take our dancing to a higher level.

Flight is a state of freedom; a state of pure joy in both body and
mind. In this weekend we will explore the dynamics, principles and
techniques of safe, unforced lifting and flying. Come prepared to
sweat, play, get upside down, be challenged and have fun! And, as if
that's not enough, it's at the end the whale-sighting season.

Schedule:
Friday night - facilitated open jam

Sat. and Sun - 4 hours of class time each day.

Location:
The Studio Maui on the island of Maui, Hawaii

Date:
April 11-13

Cost:
$95 for Sat and Sun if registered by March 31

$125 after March 31

$15 for Friday night.

To Register:
Call The Studio Maui
toll free 866-427-1427

Aaron Jessup:

A second-generation professional juggler, Aaron's first movement
discipline was circus acrobatics. However, his first movement love was
contact improvisation, which he discovered in 1990. He has been
teaching workshops and at dance festivals since 1997. A long time
bodyworker (with a private practice in San Francisco), Aaron also
taught for a year at the Boulder College of Massage therapy.

Hi everyone, moving to Hawaii

Hello,
My wife and I got a job offer on Oahu that we can't refuse...So we're moving to Hawaii. What's it like out there? We've never been but we'll be moving out mid April! Some questions for the Hawaii Burners:

1. How active are you guys? Are there lots of Burner events? Or do I have to make some?
2. In LA when we want to play with fire we just go in the backyard, don't think we're going to have a yard over there.......Where does one spin fire?
3. How much more does it end up costing to make it out to the desert every year? It seems like building large shade structures is out.
4. Any tips for moving out there?

Thanks, I look forward to playing with you guys.

I was checking out the Transformus tribe (NC burn, my friend Uncle Jonah is from there) and there is this terrible controversy about how they did ticketing. transforma.tribe.net/thread/...64b00106 Basically they made everyone apply through the website, and after allocating tix for crucial staff then randomly (RANDOMLY!) allocated the rest. A bunch of themecamps got split up and apparently a lot of people requested a lot more than they needed. Yikes.

Anywho planning for Rebirth is coming along fine, and we have a couple of fundraiser parties planned for Big Island (in April), and Oahu (March 22, this Saturday). Don't forget to submit your theme camp applications as soon as possible! The sooner we know how many and how big the sooner we can get to finding some nice real estate to stick em on.
Go here to apply:
www.kapilina.org/index.php

Art grant information to follow soon, and yes we ARE doing them again so make plans now if you're planning on asking for one.

I've mentioned this before to do a Shirt Cocking Outreach to those poor over 40 souls who are motivated by what ends to walk around naked except for a shirt on, while at Burning Man. I actually cannot go to Burning Man this year. But I may whip up a bundle of these so my friends can carry on the mission.

Remember - even one Shirt Cocker covered up is one less we need to gag about! ;)

Shouting Fire Schedule

Shouting Fire has ingnited. ShoutingFire is an online radio station that will bring a mix of alternative art, culture, and thought to the internet airwaves. Spawned by the hard-working radio staff of Burning Man's BMIR 94.5 FM, Shouting Fire aims to bring the energy and ethos of Black Rock City out of the desert and into the world at large.

Listen at http://www.shoutingfire.com

Never been to Burning Man? Looking for more than just Black Rock City noise? Not a problem. Although the station will have its share of content relating to Burning Man, the programming will not be "playa-centric." Because Shouting Fire is not just for "burners"; it's for everyone with an open mind and open ears. Interviews, news, and audio art. Performance, politics, and perspective. And, of course, lots of eclectic music from DJ's who don't just play music--but who have a passion for explaining, exploring, and celebrating it.

Our launch features a fresh block of programming each day, with each block debuting at 10am PST/1PM EST. During our launch period, we'll be repeating each day's shows starting at 2:30pm and 6:30pm PST. (You can always tune in around the clock, of course, for a mix of music, news bites, and event announcements.)

New shows will be added to the lineup as it evolves--and as our extended community (AKA YOU!!!) comes forward with the content. So be sure to contact us at shoutingfire@shoutingfire.com if you''ve got a programming idea or a show you're already producing. Because while we might be building the platform, we're all building the content.

FRIDAY 2/29 Shouting Fire live launch, beginning at 5:00PM PST

SATURDAY 3/1 Shouting Fire Sampler, featuring a five hour block of our preview programming, starting at 10am PST and 6pm PST.
Crickets with Douglas Wolk (1 hr.) We give you more of what you deserve than you deserve.

This edition features Erik Davis, author of Techgnosis, Visionary State: A Journey Through California's Spiritual Landscape, and the 33 1/3 volume on Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV.

THURSDAY 3/6 The Sound of Plaid with TradeMark Gunderson (2 hrs.)
Let's see just how "free" free-form can get...
appropriate sounds from the media environment.

FRIDAY 3/7 The Show That Has No Name (90 min.)
Music and conversation with Eric Myers and guests from across the spectrum of aesthetics and activism. Up this week is Carmen Mauk, just back from the Burners without Borders relief effort in Peru.
Coming Soon Moldover Live, Notes from the Long Now, Writers With Drinks, environmental solutions and innovative social strategies from Bioneers, webcast premieres of archival interviews with the likes of Andy Warhol, Tom Wolfe, and Douglas Adams --and whatever sonic scintillation YOU'RE scheming up....

hawaii islands burningman fire conclave update

aloha my fiery friends !!! well well, the time has come once again to come together as a family here; in the wonderful hawaiin island chain . getting into the burningman fire conclave is no easy task . with the growing number of fire artists springing up each year, the requirements to be excepted into the great circle are tighter then ever . for the last two years, i have been accepted into the circle being involved with the wonderful troupe " illumination" , which i regret to inform, will not be submitting an audition video this year to crimson rose ( burningman ). things have changed here as they always do. people change, people grow, and it is time for new seeds to be planted. i want nothing more than to feel the honor and accomplishment of being involved with the biggest fire show on earth . in order to do that; alot of work and dedication is needed . this letter is a calling out to every fire artist ,fire safety, drummers and photo/cinematographers who are dedicated to bringing our beautifull fire art back into the great circle this year . "illumination" my be gone for now, but the wonderfull people that made that group, are mostly still here . the main point of this letter is to inform everyone that we can still be in the circle if we pull together and work hard as we have always done before . anyone out there interested in making this happen with me, please contact me asap! either through this tribe , saftey3rd tribe, my email (hippy420@excite.com) or by phone: (808) 778-1246 . i believe that by march 1st, all of the names of people trying out for the conclave need to be submitted . i am going to be spending the next month contacting as many of you as possible myself, but i dont have everyones names/numbers/email addresses . remember, we have to impress the higher ups of burningman to accept us with an impressive audition video. either way, i love you all, and have faith in every single one of us that we will give this our best efforts and have fun growing closer as we build our new conclave !!! much respect to you all !!! i will be posting alot of updates and info this month, please be looking!

)'( you are the best family anyone could ask for !!!!!!!! lighting up the night skys, miah )'(

Looking for car to rent on Big Island in March

I'm going to be visiting the big island for a month (hoping to move there!), Feb 26 - March 27 (2008) and I'm looking for a vehicle to borrow/rent/lease for that period.

If you have a spare vehicle in good running condition or one you're trying to sell, I can pay $200 for the use of it for a month, plus barter massage/healing or computer work.

Maybe you have a friend who's selling their car? Could you ask them if they'd like to rent it to me? Or if you have any suggestions for where I should look, please let me know.

I'm 42, a non-smoker, non-drinker, and I have a perfect driving record (I can send a copy of my insurance record).

Peace ~ Aloha

OK OK.... as absurd as I find the act of shipping christmas trees to hawaii (cmon you schmucks, we've come up with hawaii versions of just about everything else, why can't you replace the bloody trees with something local?) they burn great and smell good while doing it. There's a whole pile of em near my house and I'm taking all I can stuff in my truck. Bonfire time!!!!! Anyone? Anyone?

Hello, Hawaii burners! My guy and I will be flying into Maui on the first of January and staying for about two weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations for camping and lower-cost lodging (couches for crashing or a spot to get a hot shower would be much appreciated)? We've got travel guides, but personal recommendations from fellow burners would be very helpful. Let us know if you have any tips on places to go, places to avoid, or favorite spots. We're also a little worried about camping in the rain on the east side and near Haleakala, so any idea of how torrential the weather is there right now would be great.

Donate to Ka Pilina before the end of the year

The year is almost over, now is your last chance to help your local interactive arts community, AND get a tax deduction for 2007.

The Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society, Inc. is engaged in and is entirely dependent on the local communities where we have representation across the state. As a nonprofit and an all-volunteer organization no one is getting paid and all profits transparently go back into projects for the betterment of the community. The organization relies on the community to fund our community projects and year-round operations.

Ticket sales for events have been our backbone of support but we can only do so much with the limited funds we have. We are applying for all sorts of grants both public and private, and in time they may really help Ka Pilina to grow. In the meantime we need the direct support of the community to help us grow to where we need to be in order to have a sustainably running organization.

If you want to donate cash directly to Ka Pilina right now the easiest way is via PayPal. All you have to do is click on the link below:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=donations%40kapilina%2eorg&item_name=Donate%20to%20Ka%20Pilina&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=USD&lc=US&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8

Or click on the link at http://wwwkapilina.org in the tab marked "Donate" at the top.

If you prefer the old fashioned method of writing a check and mailing it then please make the check out to "Ka Pilina" and mail it to 61-180 Ikuwai Place, Haleiwa, HI 96712.

As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, certain donations to Ka Pilina are tax-deductible. Cash donations are the easiest to handle and are the most deductible. Donations of assets, equipment, and in-kind may or may not be tax deductible according to the IRS. Contact donations@kapilina.org to find out if your planned non-cash donation is tax deductible or for any information you need about donating to Ka Pilina.

All you really need to claim your tax deduction is the amount you donated, the date of the donation, the name of the charity, and the EID (or employer identification number, aka Federal ID #). The EID for the Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society, Inc. is: 20-4169762

We will send you a confirmation email (or letter if you prefer) with all of this info unless you tell us not to and we will note you as a contributor on the website unless you prefer to be anonymous. Thank you for donating to Ka Pilina, your contribution will make the difference between growth and stagnation. We NEED the support of the community if we are to realize the goals of our mission statement. Thank you again.

Hello Friends,

My husband Ken and I are planning a spontaneous trip to Hawaii, after scrapping our plans to visit New York over x-mas. We will be arriving Sunday, and are seeking a place to stay for a few nights next week. We will be staying on Kauai for a few nights, and haven't booked our tickets yet, so we are flexible about which island we're flying into, etc. We're simply seeking a relaxing getaway and are not picky about which islands we go to. Do you have a guest room we could stay in for a few nights? We are tidy, considerate, and humorous house guests. In exchange, we would love to offer our home in San Francisco for you to stay when you visit here.

Thank you!

The new Ka Pilina website is up!

We have been planning and working for a long time to bring the next generation of the Ka Pilina website onsine. The new website has much more functionality but is still a little new. There are some bugs and areas still to be filled in but it already contains more information about what Ka Pilina is doing and has done than any other source on the web, even our old sites.

Check it out today at www.kapilina.org

There is a good amount of information in the main public area of the site but to access the gallery, forums, member list, and more you have to register (it's free and real easy, takes a second) as a member. We are also hoping that by establishing a membership we can someday soon introduce the concept of voting for things.

This new website is a leap forward for us and it sets us on a path to the future. It is kind of a stepping stone, to make the site we really want will take money, serious money. This new site was done for free, in fact I did the whole thing, but I am handing it over the the KP staff. Check it out and enjoy!
My husband and I will be visiting family for the Holidays on Kona. Was curious if there were any activities possibly for Solstice or New Years?
Do you do Santarchy there?
It's been a while since I had a tribe account (insert long and involved boring story), so I am afraid my new profile isn't well fleshed out at the moment.

songbird needs job in Hawaii

Aloha!

Please answer through my profile page as I won't be able to check it here!

I have always dreamed of living in Hawaii.

Anyway the funny thing is...I have recently developed asthma due to the intense pollution here in Kathmandu. The Dr said the only way to get better is to leave Nepal. So my husband and I are trying to decide where to go. He is Nepali by the way and I am American. Go see his website it you like. www.nepalmandala.com it is for his graphic design company, Mandala Graphics. We are both 37 years old.

Anyway, my options are to return to NYC, because I have family there, or try to live my dream....Hawaii!!! I have been saying to Sherap all the time...let's go live in Hawaii!

But we are kind of afraid, since we have so little money...we hear it is hard to find jobs there and we would need to be employed within two weeks of arrival or we will go bust! So I was wondering if you have any ideas...being from there and all! If you look at my profile maybe you will see some of my qualifications although I am not sure if I wrote them clearly.

But basically this:

essential oils scent design
fresh spa products design
Photoshop
Ballet teacher for ages 3-10
excellent writer all styles
grant writing
office skills
Blues and jazz singer for hotel bands

My husband is an expert graphic and website designer.
So if you have any ideas that can help us to live the dream then you will truly be an angel from heaven for us!

Peace and Love,

I am becoming intrigued with this type of massage.

I understand that there is this one lady who is in her 90s now on the big island responsible for teaching the technique.

Do you know of other teachers or places that you could recommend?

Who do you know that is really good in offering Lomilomi also not as a teacher, but as a practitioner?

Next year's Ka Pilina Camp on the Playa

Looking for suggestions, this year was stripped down and disorganized. Next year I'd like to do a more organized, and even smaller camp. A smaller camp (we had 70+ this year) would allow us to set up a group kitchen and other facilities. We might even have group meals (in which case a small camp food charge would be levied). Have to say I'm not a huge fan of randoms asking to camp when they show up at the burn as it tends to ratchet up the MOOP factor. We have a couple of ideas for next year, but I'd like to see if anyone has suggestions for the overall theme of the camp. Theme can be in alignment with American Dream theme, or not depending. Will request placement on a main axis road hopefully somewhere in C -E streets, and close to Center Camp (who knows if we'll get it, but I'll ask anyway). Point is next year I want to get away from our "theme" just being that we're from Hawai'i.

I just started a yahoo webgroup called mauiburners@yahoogroups.com

It basically will be a way for people here in maui to stay in touch, or talk about ideas regarding burning man, current island events, or what have yous! Really want to meet more people here on maui, and stay in touch!

all you have to do to subscribe is send an email here, mauiburners-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Once you have become a member of the group, easy to do, you send a message to mauiburners@yahoogroups.com and everyone who is a member of the group will recieve an email from you.

While living in Seattle a few years ago this is how a great majority of the Seattle community kept in contact, and it worked really well. I was able to meet many new wonderful people, and hear about events I might not normally have heard about!

Please, join the group, especially if you are on the island, and pass the word on to other friends who think they might like to stay in communication!

Aloha!
