Next year's Ka Pilina Camp on the Playa

Looking for suggestions, this year was stripped down and disorganized. Next year I'd like to do a more organized, and even smaller camp. A smaller camp (we had 70+ this year) would allow us to set up a group kitchen and other facilities. We might even have group meals (in which case a small camp food charge would be levied). Have to say I'm not a huge fan of randoms asking to camp when they show up at the burn as it tends to ratchet up the MOOP factor. We have a couple of ideas for next year, but I'd like to see if anyone has suggestions for the overall theme of the camp. Theme can be in alignment with American Dream theme, or not depending. Will request placement on a main axis road hopefully somewhere in C -E streets, and close to Center Camp (who knows if we'll get it, but I'll ask anyway). Point is next year I want to get away from our "theme" just being that we're from Hawai'i.

Love the folks at want it, I don't think they'd want to team up tho. We also have people camping w/ us next year who want to be relatively close to Center Camp. I think it's probably harder to get 9 and 3 esplanade sites, but don't know for sure. We'd also have to invest a lot more in camp infrastructure to make it look good. no point of being on the esplanade and looking frumpy....

I don't think there has been any desire for those camping at the KP camp to be on the Esplanade. Seth is right, we would have to be interactive 24/7. And if we were on the Esplanade I think the majority would want to be closer to Centercamp and not in the loud sound areas at the ends. We would need a lot more interactivity than just music, and that means a LOT more participation, mandatory shifts, a lot more infrastructure, and maybe even dues.

The evolution of the camp since last year has been to get smaller and more focused. Next year's camp may be half the size of this year's camp. It is not the size that matters, it's how interactive you are and what proportion of campers are involved creating that interactivity.

I have heard different opinions as to next year's location. Some like the 6:30 "A" street corner that we had in 2006, the 5:30 and "A" street corner, and I have heard others talking about being in the 3:00 plaza as well. There has also been a lot of talk about doing a Village. Besides me the rest of the Island Council is lukewarm to hostile about the idea. It may happen without us though, a couple of Pacific Regionals are already fired up about the idea of a "Ring of Fire Village" or perhaps taking over a plaza (or making our own at some intersection) called "Pacific Plaza". We could tag along with them (rather than spearhead the project and be more likely to be where we want to be), it sure would be easier.

I don't mind doing the village thing as long as we're not spearheading it. Perfectly content to be responsible for our theme camp (and related MOOP issues), don't want to be stuck footing the bill for a whole village tho.

3 o'clock and 9 o'clock plazas will usually have Ranger Outposts on them. which can be good. or bad. depending upon your personal relationship with the Rangers.

having been a Ranger i'd view it as a plus to be on a plaza with them next door and emergency medical just down the block. especially if you're part of a larger group of fire toy users.

So there has been a lot of talk about shrinking the KP camp to about half the size of this year (to roughly 35 campers or so). This would allow us to be more organized, help to keep the camp cleaner, and make it possible for us to pool resources to provide certain camp resources.

There is a very idea to have an optional food plan that I think Jennie and Sunshine would spearhead. It would probably be $100-$150 per person for a week of cooked meals, whoever would want it would have to buy in at least a month before BM. Jennie wants to bring her playa kitchen (one of the best I have seen on the playa) for this "food plan", and it wouldn't be a general kitchen for everyone to use, only those who buy in.

There is also an idea for minimal camp dues (like $20-$40) for consumables (like gas and ice) and minor camp improvements (like a new stove) that will be available for future KP camps to use. I imagine that KP camp members would reserve their spot in the camp by paying their camp dues and when we reach the maximum capacity there would be no more members allowed.

What do you all think about that?

      - personally, i think KPs location was abosolute aces this year - low key, low traffic and easy to find - i think the 430/730 plazas have a spiffy energy and are the way to go...

      - we all know how ocd i am about the whole food/kitchen thing....if we do this, it has be wildly organized and totally budgeted within reason, i dont have the resources to help foot anyone's good time this year (yeah, yeah, i know these have been wild threats in the past, but this time its real!) so all things need to be taken into account - actual food costs, good coolers (i know we all have coolers, but they are dying a quick death, the cost and energy of buying ice every day instead of just investing in some solid ass coolers is pretty much a draw), cost of transporting said coolers out there (big expense) and keeping those m-er f-ers cold and covered on the playa - it all adds up, and i think we need to get a realistic grasp on some numbers before we throw out an amount - i have done the group cook/kitchen thing for a long time and have ti down to a pretty finite science...as i prepare ahead of time about 400+ meals for the playa and freeze them every year...

      - also, i am more than willing to donate my kitchen set up, my energy in putting all this together (no small task), but the whole day or two before the playa cluster-f of getting all this together would need to have another set (or two of hands) - so i would need someone out here helping at the last minute getting coolers packed, stuff organized, etc.

      - i do have a solid menu for the week that i have used for a few years, that has been very successful, reasonably cheap and has an awesome balance of proteins/carbs/veggies and most importantly TASTE. i feel that fueling the body is essential on the playa, and when its homecooked, that just provides a little heart fuel that i think people really need during a long week

      - anyway, im in. let me know what i can do to help or help someone else, but am offering my services, i have done this for years and can do it in my sleep...i just know the parameters and needs of such a project

and one more word on location - remember, its a lot easier to find a party than get rid of one...keep the camp low key as a nice sanctuary and find the fracas somewhere else...
