Aloha!
Please answer through my profile page as I won't be able to check it here!
I have always dreamed of living in Hawaii.
Anyway the funny thing is...I have recently developed asthma due to the intense pollution here in Kathmandu. The Dr said the only way to get better is to leave Nepal. So my husband and I are trying to decide where to go. He is Nepali by the way and I am American. Go see his website it you like. www.nepalmandala.com it is for his graphic design company, Mandala Graphics. We are both 37 years old.
Anyway, my options are to return to NYC, because I have family there, or try to live my dream....Hawaii!!! I have been saying to Sherap all the time...let's go live in Hawaii!
But we are kind of afraid, since we have so little money...we hear it is hard to find jobs there and we would need to be employed within two weeks of arrival or we will go bust! So I was wondering if you have any ideas...being from there and all! If you look at my profile maybe you will see some of my qualifications although I am not sure if I wrote them clearly.
But basically this:
essential oils scent design
fresh spa products design
Photoshop
Ballet teacher for ages 3-10
excellent writer all styles
grant writing
office skills
Blues and jazz singer for hotel bands
My husband is an expert graphic and website designer.
So if you have any ideas that can help us to live the dream then you will truly be an angel from heaven for us!
Peace and Love,
Willow and Sherap Lama

Re: songbird needs job in Hawaii
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 2:42 PMIMHO...finding a job in Hawaii, at least all Oahu, isn't all that hard, in fact, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Due to profligate government spending and a booming tourist-oriented service sector, Hawaii seems to be in a continuous state of Keynesian full employment. In short, you shouldn't have much trouble finding some sort of work your first day off the plane. Beyond that, a lot of jobs pay under the table so even if he doesn't have a work visa, your husband shouldn't have much trouble either. However, finding a job where you derive some sort of personal satisfaction and can simultaneously maintain a pre-specified quality of life is another matter entirely. Whether you make it here or just become another "six-month tourist" is really a matter of how flexible you are and how willing you are to sacrifice for the right to call the islands your home.
As far as your skill set goes, it's promising. There are certainly markets in the tourist industry for customized essential oils and spa products and many local parents are willing to pay exorbitant rates for instruction in the classical performancing arts. Just keep in mind that the typical local mindset in Hawaii is one of passionate provinciality bordering upon xenophobia so you might find it extremely hard to break into specialty industries as someone who isn't a lifetime Hawaiian resident. There are certainly plenty of desk jobs for your office skill set as well but typically those sorts of jobs pay substantially less in relation to your cost of living in Hawaii versus other places. Also, most local government jobs are only available after you meet a minimum Hawaii residency requirement (I think it's 18 months).
Keep in mind that I'm only speaking for Oahu. One thing Mainlanders (get used to that term) don't usually understand is that each of the major islands is a world unto itself. The difference between any two islands is probably about akin to the differences between NYC and Chicago. -

Re: songbird needs job in Hawaii
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 3:43 PMlol "six-month tourist". Hawaii is definitely one of those places where you really have to WANT to live. I wouldn't say we're provincial (I can only speak for O'ahu) so much as wary of newcomers due to the high attrition rate. A lot of people come here and get frustrated at the cost of living and the fact that it can take a while for the locals to open up to them. From the locals point of view unless you can stick it out for more than a year (preferably longer) you're just passing through. Still it's a beautiful place to live, and the friends you make will be good ones. -
