Aloha,

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our dear friend Jon DesPacio (aka Mango Jon) on June 6th. Jon was an integral member of Ka Pilina Hawaii and served as our Fire Chief for each Rebirth.

Jon was also an early veteran of Burning Man first going the second year it was in the Black Rock desert. Jon was one of the very first few Rangers and one of those first years it was him who sold the Burning Man tickets onsite out of that old small silver trailer (with only a gun as backup). He also organized the first (and I think one of the only) playa marathon.

He was a kind soul and a good man and dear friend. We will miss him.

Below are a few words from Freddi (she was also his partner) and Danger Ranger.

From Freddi:

Friends
Most of you know that Mango Jon DesPacio died at his home Sat.June 6th.
He had been at the warm ponds earlier that morning, declined to go to a party as his stomache was upset but planned to have dinner with me that night. I found him on the porch.I tried to revive him but was unable to. He looked peaceful.
His Daughters Miel and Mari were here from Califonia, also Miels' husband Thad and grandchildren Andre and Lydia.

We had the memorial on June 14th. We rented 80 chairs. It was exactly right. There was music,
several people with gutiars. a bass a mandolin and a digeridoo. Miel spoke about her father and read an original version of the lords prayer (very beautiful) then Andre, the 4 year old, sang "twinkel twinkel little star" and then everyone sang it with him. It was so sweet. Then people got up and told Mango Jon stories. Then more music and people drifted away.
I want to thank you all for the support . Jackie helped me clean and get ready for his family. Jackie, did I thank you for the flowers and the box of toys for the kids? You ROCK Sista! Mike Muang sent an amazing piece of art, Ranger Partime brought a very burnable votive type structure. It was so fine to see Eli, Drew and August(Our communities youngest burner)Bridget and Jerry Guy and Jodi and Nicky, Pat and Jamie, thanks for being there,Thank you all for your phone calls an emails. I know I'll miss him. He was an excellent fire marshal.

Aloha
Freddi

From Michael Michael (aka Danger Ranger):

I just got word of the passing of Hawaiian burner Jon DesPacio. He was a participant and Black Rock Ranger during the early years of Burning Man 1993-1995.

I regret that I was never able to take him up on the offer of a stay at his tropical farm in Hawaii.

In 1995 he organized the Gerlach to Burning Man marathon run:
